Summer - A Pirate's Life for Me

A Pirate’s Life for Me

This term, the children will be going on a fun pirate adventure. They’ll explore people, places and stories from long ago, starting with our exciting ‘Pirate Academy’. Through play, maps, treasure hunts and sea‑themed activities, they’ll begin to notice how life in the past was different from life today.

They’ll think about what pirates looked like, how they travelled, where they explored, and what the sea is like. We’ll also talk about looking after our oceans. The children will get creative by making pirate flags, designing ships, building with different materials, and joining in with storytelling and small‑world play. They’ll also practise early writing by making labels, postcards and simple messages in bottles.

Throughout the topic, the children will be encouraged to ask questions, share ideas and work together. We’ll finish with a special Pirate Day where the children can dress up, complete pirate challenges, and receive a message from stranded pirates who need their help. Working as a crew, they’ll plan and build a raft or boat and send a message back.

This topic gives the children a playful way to explore the past and present while building curiosity, confidence and imagination.

Supporting Learning at Home

Children can enjoy this topic at home by sharing pirate stories together and talking about the characters, the setting and what happens in the story. Encourage your child to retell the adventure in their own words or act it out with toys to build language and sequencing skills. Simple crafts like making a pirate hat, telescope or flag from cardboard help develop creativity and fine‑motor skills. You can also look at maps together, talk about places you’ve visited, or explore the seaside if you’re able to, helping your child make links with the world around them. Listening to sea sounds or calming ocean music and chatting about how it makes them feel can also support imagination and emotional vocabulary.
