During this expressive arts topic - ‘Destination Disney’, we shall be focusing on the Disney Pixar film ‘Up’ and will be exploring the impact of deforestation and climate change in our world and how it affects nature and wildlife as well as ourselves. We shall be exploring Wales’ aims to create a greener planet with countries within the Amazon Rainforest. In addition, we will be forming links with Greenhill Manor through letter writing. This will relate to our whole-school story ‘Gruffalo Granny’ as well as our topic stimulus ‘Up’.
Following a trip to Plantasia, the children will be exploring and comparing different rainforest creatures to native creatures of Wales.
The end product for this topic will be for the children to create an animation film using ‘Keynote’ based on a scene from Disney Pixar’s ‘Up’.
How to support your child at home
In mathematics we will be looking at place value, addition and subtraction over the next few months as well as multiplication closer to Christmas. We set timestables practise every Friday to practise at home. Below are just some ways you could practise these skills at home and consolidate learning.
Place-value suggestions:
Spot numbers around you Ask your child to read numbers on doors, signs or prices and tell you the hundreds, tens and ones.
Build numbers with objects Use Lego, pasta or coins. Hundreds = big groups, Tens = groups of 10, Ones = single pieces. Make numbers like 134 or 208 together.
Compare numbers Write two numbers. Ask: “Which is bigger?” “Which has more tens?”
Addition and Subtraction suggestions:
Add real values Add two items when shopping or online, or ingredients when making food etc.
Quick number bonds Ask: “What makes 10?” “What makes 20?” “What makes 100?” Great for car journeys. This would be VERY beneficial.
Missing number puzzles Example: 4 + ___ = 6 Helps children think about the relationship between numbers.
Number line jumps Draw a number line. Children show adding or subtracting by jumping in tens and ones.

In Language we will looking at narrative and poetry. Reading as often as you can would grow imagination, vocabulary and will familiarise children with specific spellings and words. We set spelling words to practise every Friday, if these could be practise throughout the week please. We expect children to automatically be using full stops and capital letters correctly most of the time so practising these would be very beneficial.
