Maths

At Ynysowen, we use a programme called ‘Big Maths’ to support our teaching of mathematics.

'Big Maths' is a scheme designed as a daily programme of mental maths, with a strong emphasis on learning key number facts and developing mental agility.

It develops and embeds core skills to ensure pupils can apply these confidently to solve problems.

We use the ‘Big Maths’ approach in our lessons in order to improve arithmetic skills and fluency across the school.

The scheme provides a clear progression of skills from year to year and ensures consistent use of methods and vocabulary throughout the school.

At each stage, prior learning is developed and ensures children are secure in their knowledge.

The approach is fun and engaging as many concepts are taught with the help of a range of characters.

Each week, pupils complete two 'Big Maths' assessments.

One assessment tests pupils' quick recall of known number facts (Learn Its) and the other tests pupils' knowledge of taught mathematical concepts (CLIC Challenges).
