Our Topic this term is called Dragons` Den. During this topic, the children will work in groups to set up a Christmas- themed stall, and design, make, and market a range of Christmas arts and crafts that they can sell at the Christmas Fete. They will have the opportunity to interpret data, and use digital technologies creatively to communicate, find, and analyse information. In addition, they will undertake research and evaluate what they find. Children will be given opportunities to ask questions and solve problems related to the topic, using research to help them formulate their own views and opinions. They will be working collaboratively, by creating a business name and logo. Groups will be given the opportunity to think about where the resources come from and whether or not they are sustainable.

In the later stages of the Topic, children will be challenged to create a brochure showing their products, making sure their ideas fit withina given budget. They will demonstrate understanding of profit and loss.The end product will involve parents purchasing the created products in the School Christmas fete.

They could help plan a small family enterprise, such as making a Christmas decoration, card, or gift, before working out how much it would cost to make, and deciding on a selling price. Children can compare prices in shops or online to find the best value materials, create a simple budget, estimate costs, calculate totals, and discuss how a profit could be made. Encourage your child to read Christmas catalogues, brochures, advertisements, and product reviews, discussing the persuasive language and features used to attract customers. They could design a logo, create a poster or leaflet to advertise a homemade product, write a persuasive description or slogan, or even produce a short sales pitch to present to family members. They can talk about where products come from, whether they are sustainably sourced, and why this matters. This will also support the research and decision-making skills being developed in school. These fun, practical activities will help reinforce children's confidence in applying their maths and literacy skills in real-life contexts while preparing them for their own Christmas enterprise project.
