ALN

Additional Learning Needs

We welcome children of all abilities and we recognise the importance of valuing the achievement of all our pupils. The legislation in place regarding Additional Learning Needs (ALN) can be found on our school website or on the Welsh Government website below:

https://gov.wales/sites/default/files/publications/2021-03/the-additional-learning-needs-code-for-wales-2021.pdf

A pupil is identified as having ALN if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability which calls for additional learning provision and who a) has greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others the same age or b) has a disability for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010 which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities for education or training of a kind generally provided for others of the same age.

The school seeks to meet the needs of all of these children through the provision of additional learning support and careful, individual planning.

If a child is identified as having ALN that child will then have an Individual Development Plan, which will identify the additional provision that the school will put in place to support their needs. Parents are very much a part of this process.

At Ynysowen Primary School, we have a Local Authority designated special class (Complex Needs Learning Resource Base). This class caters for children with a diverse range of additional learning needs.

Pupils attending this class will have been subject to a formal assessment of their particular needs having been undertaken by the Educational Psychologist. Children who attend this class will have an Individual Development Plan that is maintained by the Local Authority.

The children attending this class come to us from across the County Borough in its entirety. Naturally, as we operate a policy of integration at Ynysowen, children attending this specialised setting also integrate for a part of their school day into mainstream classes.

NB. A copy of our school’s Additional Learning Needs Policy is available for anyone who would wish to study it in more detail.
